Miles Merrill - Creative Director
Originally from Chicago (birthplace of slams), Miles is a writer, performer, facilitator and event coordinator who combines poetry with theatre, experimental audio, hip-hop beats, stand-up and, occasionally, political confrontation. Miles introduced poetry slams to Australia, co-wrote and co-directed Slamming for the Sydney Festival and performed with UK DJ Billy Bizniz at the Sydney Opera House. Internationally, Merrill has performed in Krakow's Audio Art Festival, and writers festivals in Bali, Beijing, Vancouver and Calgary. He's the ideas and meetings person.
Emily Scott - Arts Administrator
Emily Scott is a writer and arts enthusiast from Albury, NSW. After graduating from University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies, she discovered her passion for art through volunteering at Murray Art Museum Albury. Emily is the organisational admin whizz behind the Word Travels operation.
John Valatos - Graphic Design Intern
John Valatos is a Graphic Design graduate from Shillington College Sydney. He likes the conceptual part of the design process and producing clean, simple designs, enjoys playing soccer and listening to lots of different music from Jazz to Rock and loves a good coffee.
Lucia De Luca- Arts Administration Intern
Lucia is taking a break from Canadian winter and is an exchange student at the University of Sydney. In Montreal, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Education at McGill University and works in recreation programs for people with special needs. Lucia recently rediscovered her love for spoken word poetry and performed at TEDxMcGill. She also enjoys backpacking, making too many Friends references, and avocados.
Bec Fortune - Operations Manager
Bec is an Arts Manager dedicated to delivering artistic visions with integrity, purity, love and respect.
Bec joins the Word Travels team with a background in festivals and large outdoor art productions. Bec’s experience spans production, marketing and project administration roles at Perth, Darwin and Sydney Festivals, Opera Australia, The 21st Biennale of Sydney and The Sydney Writers’ Festival.
Elliot Cameron - Program & Education Officer
Elliot is a poet and educator from Western Sydney, a NSW Poetry Slam finalist and two-time Bankstown Grand Slam finalist. Elliot studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Wollongong, and began performing his poetry in 2013. Elliot is a co-organiser of Enough Said Poetry Slam in Wollongong, and founded Narellan Poetry Slam in 2018.
Didi de Graaf - Arts Administration Intern
Didi de Graaf is a screenwriter and First AD residing in Sydney. Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Didi moved to Australia to complete a Bachelors in Screen Production at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). Outside of writing and filmmaking, Didi is interested in producing stories and creative content that promotes diversity and inclusion across all art mediums.
