Rooty Hill High School Students at Spoken Four

Students from Rooty Hill High School jumped up on stage at our recent Spoken Four event at the Sydney Writers Festival, performing to a capacity crowd of 350 people. The performance was the culmination of a series of Wordshops coordinated by Word Travels and WestWords (the Western Sydney Young People's Literature Project). Wordshops were held with the school's drama students and several went on to perform at The Rumble - a youth poetry slam in Blacktown.

Year 11 students Sumayyah Siddiqui (pictured), Gavin Newman and Imraan Daniels were invited to perform at Spoken Four in between the headline acts. Word Travels Creative Director, Miles Merrill, worked with the students to prepare them for their appearance."The Word Travels artists prodded them for almost an hour before the kids relented," Mr Merrill said."[The audience] gave them a roar of applause and cheered as they each jumped onto the stage for their turn at the mic. Their nerves eased by the enthusiastic crowd, the students delivered their writing with passion, solid timing and confidence."Word Travels and WestWords are planning to work together on further projects n Western Sydney, with a view to expanding The Rumble youth poetry slam throughout the region in 2012.
